There is a great danger lurking on our doorsteps today. It could be infecting your homes and churches. Often I come across people who wonder why I believe the “fundamentalist” movement is so dangerous to the church. What makes this movement so dangerous is that it can be so difficult to ascertain what exactly those that are in it stand for. In fact I know some people who would hold to the title and are good, God fearing people. But there are others! And they my friends are dangerous. This is why you should be giving those of us who are pointing out there errors.

For a list defining characteristics of this dangerous movement I direct you here

A few of my favorite characteristics are

  • Believe “mixed bathing” is an abomination of the devil
  • Disdains a social gospel––that is they believe the church should be more about calling down fire and brimstone than doing something to help the poor and oppressed of the world (Too bad the Apostle James didn’t see it that way)

Go here to learn more about this danger. (BTW thanks Ken and Thinkrup for the idea)

Wow!!
Did you know that more than a few of the attributes mentioned would fit Jesus and the apostles? The “trite and untrue” wears very thin.
The assumption is that those who read the Word and believe it is foundation, never do any good works, or they are ….shudder….pharisees
Evidently Jesus thought foundation was essential. That is what Matthew 7:13-29 is all about. There are good works that come from man, and good works of the Kingdom, which come from God. They look similar but they are not of the same source (see Bono’s biography); much the same as the wheat and the tares which look very similar until harvest time.
Jesus did not preach a “social gospel” He preached the Kingdom. Your desperation to discredit is embarrassing..

ChrisP,

You’ve built a beautiful straw man, and almost knocked him down…

Hey Chris P,
Did you read the original list at thinkrup? Jesus also talked about fasting and taking care of those in need, but somehow those are emergent qualities. There’s some satire and some seriousness here man, but if you want to bring Jesus in, at least know from whence you speak.

I think the humor aspect was lost on ‘em… anyway, Chris P.’s response shows the continued unwillingness/inability to dialogue…

One other thing to add to the list is that being attacked for your ideas, no matter how ludicrous, is good and feeds into their “martyr” complex.

There is no martyr complex, I always know from whence I speak, and if I hear “strawman” one more time………

I actually have more of sense of humor than you do, but this post isn’t funny it’s the tired out “strawman” :-)
arguments clothed in sophomoric humor.
As for dialogue, you are the ones who put down or blow off my thoughts and opinions because you aren’t interested in opposing viewpoint. Dialogue =agreeing to disagree, according to your
rose-colored glasses way of looking at things.

you aren’t interested in opposing viewpoint

I think you have this blog confused with the former Slice of Laodicea.

Chris, I think you’re not giving the humor in this enough credit. I know people who don’t even know the quotes (and there are some good ones for regular CRN.com readers) thought it was very funny. The sophomoric comment hurt! :)

ChrisP,

Let’s be clear, then. You said

The assumption is that those who read the Word and believe it is foundation, never do any good works, or they are ….shudder….pharisees

This is a strawman because nobody here has said, suggested or assumed such a thing. I believe that the Jesus is the Word, and that He and the written Word are the foundation. I also try to put my faith into action. While there are times I find myself in one of the pharisee camps, I do my best not to be.

What this really does show, though, is that you believe that those who disagree with Slice/CRN’s opinions do NOT read the Word and do NOT believe it is foundational. For myself and the others I know who post here, I can say that this could not be farther from the truth, and it is this insinuation (and others like it) that prevents/inhibits dialogue.

That is why it is a strawman argument. Your underlying assumptions/accusations are false.

Jesus did preach the Kingdom, and PART OF the Kingdom IS a social gospel. Ignoring this (which I am not suggesting you do) or decrying it (which you appear to do above) is a denial of Jesus’ message.

RE: dialog – at the risk of getting into a pissing contest… it’s the CRN that does not allow dialog, and the old Slice limited it to agreements only.

As for your definition of dialog, check out the exchanges with Amy under Dwanya’s hit piece on Mosaic… not rose colored glasses there, just good interaction… and notice, at no time did anyone tell Amy that opposing them was opposing the LORD or any of the other shallow methods of the so-called discernment crowd.

If you feel Joe is wrong than prove it. Show us where he is wrong. So far, what you are saying does not make any sense. I would consider taking a closer look and Jesus and Pharissee’s; there is nothing on this list that they were accused of. I will give you ,they might have spoke in old English. Any way, this post obviously offends you, so tear apart point by point and share with us all why you find it so offensive. We are dying to know.
