Mike Corley responded to Joe’s open letter.
It is pretty interesting, and I think most of you would enjoy hearing it.  After hearing this, I feel more secure in our mission here.  I was frustrated and scared about what these men were doing even a few months ago.  I see now that God is raising up people to contend for the faith and the Bride of Christ here and at other sites run by our brothers and sisters.  Our grassroots voices are being heard and having an effect.  It is amazing to see what God is doing in this new generation of believers, unashamed of the gospel and not afraid to infiltrate culture.
Many of us understand here that while a few splinter groups in the emerging/emergent movement have gone astray, we cannot and will not paint anyone who looks different with the same brush.  Film, music, dance, candles, incense, helping our non-following neighbor all can aid in sharing the gospel.  That changing the methods DOES NOT change the message.  We understand the true meaning of being in the world, but not being of the world.  We see a dying world outside of our four walls and a steeple, and we will do whatever asked of us to show these people the faith, love and hope of Jesus Christ.
Anyhow, listen to the response and hear for yourself.  These were two quotes that I really enjoyed.

“I don’t ridicule Erwin McManus, and Doug Padgett, or Mark Driscoll, or anybody else”

“We are not about analyzing people”

Does anyone know of any place where there is a transcript of this? I can’t get audio on my computer at work today! RRRR :)

Nevermind, my boss let me use his computer. He mixed a couple of letters up there. I never said some of that, and some that I did he sort of failed to use in context. Interesting. We didn’t get to listen to the whole thing, I’ll do that later I guess.

God raised you up as a sharpening stone for the sword of the Spirit that is the Word of God.

As for candles and what have you, what did Paul say about all things being permissible but not necessarily beneficial or edifying? 99% of what the churches do is a complete waste of time.

I wish, just once, because I have asked so many times, Ken, Ingrid and Mike would explain how someone like Rick Warren is not contending for the faith. Not that I agree with everything he does but since he is one of their favorite whipping boys, I will use him. He does not preach or share the Gospel the way they like, suggesting he does not preach the whole Gospel but he sure did it on the Christmas Eve Service that was shown on Fox News. I notice Slice was pretty silent on that one.

So the question is, how do you explain the thousands of people who have come to know Christ in his church and are now serving and ministering and bearing fruit? That same thing happens in John MacArthur’s church. That is because it is not about a method, but because both men contend for the faith through the preaching of Scripture and people are saved through the conviction of Holy Spirit and salvation in Christ alone. When they belittle and oppose Rick Warren they are opposing someone who is contending for the faith. It seems to me that then they are opposing the work of God. That is what bothers me the most.

When they speak out against someone who denies the absolute authority and truth of Scripture, they are contending for the faith. When they speak out against a cult like Mormonism, they are contending for the faith.

You’re so right and so wise, Chris. Why even get together at all – let’s just cloister up and let everyone else go to hell. If they’re elect, they’ll be OK, and if not, well – why even waste your time…

[Removing tongue from cheek]
Seriously, Chris, who are you to judge whether what a church 2,000 miles away (or 20 miles away) does that is permissable is beneficial or edifying if you’re not part of that local body?

Oh right… you can’t.

Hmmm…Dr. Voddie Baucham on Corley’s program quotes Chesterton, a devout Catholic. When will these fundamentalists stop quoting Catholics and Anglicans???

Chris P.

man… you are sounding like a deconstructionist…

In fact that sounds like a post right off of a emerging site about 3 years ago… not much any more as we have sort of come to see that it is not the “church” that is the problem, but most often the misunderstanding of it’s function.

So… when did you begin to swim in the sea of postmodernism? If so, I would like to talk to you a bit about the dangerous side of PM and the difference emerging is from that ideology…

(Now if I can get my tongue out of my cheek…)

Be Blessed Chris… and go to the local hospital and share God’s grace with an aids patient. not all have the disease from a sinful life… some have gotten it through blood transfusions or as one person I know stuck herself with a needle after she had drawn blood from an aids patient… do you think their cure is still death? remember the wages of sin is death… and you too will die… but the hope is in the resurrection…that we will rise to New Life in Christ and Live in the New Creation…

THIS JUST IN:
apparently Paul addressed candles and incense in church somewhere in scripture! That must be in First Silva.

and we are the ones not using scripture correctly?

So I listened to the Mike Corley/Ken Silva radio program.

That’s 50 minutes of my life I don’t get back.

In the newest Mike Corley show, he interviews Roger Moran about the dangers of the emerging church. Ten minutes in the show, Corley plays David Crowder as his bumper music. HUH??? Apparently the emerging church is so dangerous, Corley doesn’t even know he’s promoting it’s worship music.

Anyone that is a pastor or teacher, whether in a church or through the blogosphere, is subject to examination of their teachings. No one is above examination, whether it is Rob Bell or Ken Silva, Mark Driscoll or John MacArthur. Anyone even familiar with the Internet knows that once you put out your ideas and opinions out, they are subject to scrutiny. To think that you are above questioning and above reproach is to set yourself up for a fall. We need to all examine the men that we have as teachers and see if what they are teaching actually matches up with what the Bible teaches. The Bible is the final authority on what is true and what is false. Case in point: I have read Ken Silva and others examination of “Velvet Elvis”. I have also read others in favor of it. I could choose a side and hammer that until the cows come home. Instead, I am picking up a copy tonight to read for myself. That is what we should do with any book, article, or sermon. Read or listen to it and then examine it in the light of scripture. Do not let others do the thinking and reading for you.

In Christ,

Ricky Rickard, Jr.
