I was away from the blog for a week while serving at the 2007 Mosaic Origins Conference in Pasadena, CA.  It was an amazing experience over all!  We had over 500 pastors and leaders out who are doing some pretty amazing things all over the world.  Literally over ¼ of the conference was from oversees.  It is beautiful what God is doing here in the United States and internationally as he continues to refine his church through much of the emerging movement.

I got to thinking about a few things while there.  These men are out making a huge impact on the world.  One guy I met actually trains native pastors in a closed country in Africa.  That isn’t the amazing part though.  He takes them into remote villages via boat.  When they arrive he kills all the man-eating alligators in their river that have been eating small children and livestock.  The villagers are so overwhelmed and grateful that they allow one of his young pastors to assimilate into their village and live among them.  Oh, and he also pastors an emerging church of 5,000!

I realized that if you are on mission with God, you have little time to sit and complain.  I mean, when you are actually making a difference in the world, you don’t need to constantly attack the “opposition”.  Very few of these men spend their time writing blogs about how useless the traditional church is… they are out living and teaching what they believe.  Their lives are their apologetics.

When I look at “ministers” like Ingrid and Ken Silva and Dwayna, I can’t help but ask the question, “what impact are they having on the world?”  None of them have effective ministries.  None of them seem to be having any impact on the lost.  So what exactly are they doing with all their time?

Well, rather than take the time to do the hard work that so many in the world are doing with God, they write criticisms.  They sit back and attack others while the workers are out gathering the harvest.  It’s almost like those kids on the playground who never could play baseball very week, so they sit in the bleachers and make fun of everyone out playing.  It’s one thing to be making an impact and having a critical eye (which is why I can somewhat respect what MacArthur has done… respect, but don’t agree).  However, when you are making no impact on the world and just sit and complain, your voice isn’t valid.

Let this be a reminder to all of us.  Always live a life that is actively changing the hearts of people, but just criticizing those around you.  I have said it before, and try to live by it.  Don’t simply shout at the darkness, but always light a candle.

Actually you know nothing about what Ingrid, Ken and Dwayna do.
I also invite you to my neck of the woods.

Why do you think you need to compare your works to anyone else’s… I have heard this so many times is just makes my head spin.

I think if the way you like people so much the woods are a good place for you. Yet, many of us hold full time jobs on top of our ministry… my spare time is nil… an that I spend with my own family.

I am glad you are SOOOOO busy… that is a blessing… yet I think that it is rather arrogant to use your “works” as a sign on how much you are accomplishing for God… that would just be your reward right there…. so be blessed!

From what I’ve seen and experienced, your neck of the woods is pretty spectacular… not sure what ya do there… but I like the woods – as it were.

Neil,

I have people all the time say this sort of thing which I see as rather immature… God has people where He has them for His reasons… And I see so often others placing guilt trips on people that they are not busy enough…

In fact this runs right in line with the idea we are to be “separate” (which there is a clear biblical teaching on that is often twisted into something totally contrary to its teachings). The idea that we must be separate from the “sinners” yet without knowing it “clergy” are telling their congregation that they need to leave their “heathen” jobs as they are not to “be yoked together with unbelievers.” Which if we are honest almost every job out there is a worker yoked to the business that is not “Christian”.

So, as far a degenerating I see it already has if one has to parade their “works” before others to let them know how hard it is around where they are…

It just bothers me… that’s all! = )

Blessings,

Good post Nathan. We should all be too busy doing ministry to complain about it. I volunteer with a disaster group and we have a saying – “It is not productive to criticize the disaster response during the disaster response”.

Iggy,

I understand. I liked the post as well. And I agree about the “be separate” aspect. Obviously there is a place for separation from the world and it’s lostness – yet you can’t be a light if you’re not in the dark, nor can you be salt if you’re not in the soup. Recently at church I heard a guy say that a bunch of parents started their own “Christian Scouting Group” so their kids didn’t have to go camping with the local Boy Scout Troop – I bit my tongue. Maybe I should not have, maybe I should have said something.

In my missiology classes we refereed to this phenomenon as creating a Christian Ghetto.

Neil,

I see that we can have a separate community that will then go out… but I am hearing more and more from certain groups this teaching of “separation” which flies in the face of the ministry of reconciliation.

Separation is that we are not stealing, lying, sleeping with others not our spouses… not in the “high moral” way, but in that we are new creations and are now new people… we are not like those who have not found Christ.

We tend to seek to be comfortable… and I see no where that as a goal or command of God… He is to be our comfort… when? In times of trials and tribulations… which means we will be in the thick of things and He promises to be there…

I guess it is easier to get “Amen’s” if everyone in the church agrees with you…

(The rebuttal will always be Amos 3:3 which is a gross misuse of this scripture as it is about walking in agreement alright… that the Israelites were walking in agreement with the pagan nations and not with God… it is not about everyone agreeing in a church with each other or the pastor…)

So I agree with you Neil, and that Boy Scout thing is about as sad I have heard… maybe if there was no boy scouts in the area and a church sponsored a boy scout “like” group open to anyone, but again it sounds like it is just for Christians…. Arrrrgh…

Blessings
