MeltdownThis past several months, as I’ve perused Slice/CR?N/AM, a song I first heard my senior year in high school keeps popping back into my head. Neil has even referenced it a few times. So, to get it out of the internal repetitive radio station, I’m going to post the lyrics… It is from Steve Taylor’s ‘Meltdown’ album…

Guilty By Association

So you need a new car? let your fingers take a walk
through the business guide for the “born again” flock
you’ll be keeping all your money in the kingdom now
and you’ll only drink milk from a Christian cow
don’t you go casting your bread to keep the heathen well-fed
line Christian pockets instead–avoid temptation

guilty by association

Turn the radio on to a down-home drawl
hear a brylcream prophet with a message for y’all
“I have found a new utensil in the devil’s toolbox
and the heads are gonna roll if Jesus rocks
it’s a worldly design! God’s music should be divine!
try buying records like mine–avoid temptation”

guilty by association

So you say it’s of the devil and we’ve got no choice
because you heard a revelation from the “still small voice?”
if the Bible doesn’t back it then it seems quite clear
perhaps it was the devil who whispered in your ear

It’s a Telethon Tuesday for “The Gospel Club”
“send your money in now or they’re gonna pull the plug!”
just remember this fact when they plead and beg
When The Chicken Squawks Loudest Gonna Lay A Big Egg
you could be smelling a crook
you should be checking The Book
but you’d rather listen thank look–the implication

guilty by association

Have a great weekend!

:sarcasm and stupid questions off.

Jeff,

“You post that Brian McClaren is a person that inspires you on your blog site.

So i am told LOL!… then i am guilty of associating with Chuck Missler, J. Vernon Magee, Maj Ian Thomas, a couple of people who are or were involved in the Church of God, a Catholic, a couple of Calvinist, a few Arminians, Some missionaries, N.T. Wright, Irenaeus, a Lutheran, some people who are really into house churches, JPUSA, some sites against human trafficking, an anti pornography site, larknews, marriage enrichment, Vineyard Church sites, my online radio station, and this site also… so I am guilty guilty guilty by association.

Brendt,

It was not actually a “Tarot” card, but the cover of i Predict 1990 had a picture that had what looked sort of like one, but it was not one at all as it was a picture of himself surronded with a Vine with fruit and a rose, that drama figures of happy and sad… while he is in the middle giving the “one way” sign…

Here is the account though of the imfamous cover…

“I Predict 1990 is the title of the fourth album by singer/songwriter Steve Taylor.

The cover, which became controversial because some Christian book store owners felt that it resembled a Tarot card, was designed and painted by Taylor’s wife, Debi Taylor. It was actually intended to resemble early 20th-century French poster art.”

Probably Steve’s best album ever. Although there were some nice moments on “I Want To Be A Clone” and “Liver”. :)

Sheeesh Brendt, I caught the “sarcasm and stupid questions off” bit… I just remember this being about as big as stink as some things that come out of CRN… and was giving the background on it…

so lighten up bubba…. you are sounding a bit too touchy like you read too much Slice or CRN!

Rick,

I tell you, when this song came out… I laughed so hard as I was a new, new Christian… who wondered if I could even be one as I “had long hair, played electric guitar and sang rock songs.”

I remember seeking out a Bible College in Canada about 200 miles from the town in Montana I was in… I thought I could get out of my hometown and get a clean break, get set up on a good path and spiritual journey, but since I have long hair, played electric guitar and liked “Christian rock music” I was told i was not welcomed there.” Thus the start of my illustrious and wonderful life in Christ… If it wasn’t for Larry Norman, Degarmo and Key, Randy Stonehill, Petra, Sweet Comfort Band, Phil Keaggy 2nd Chapter of Acts and later Steve Taylor… I would have just gone back to drugs sex and rock and roll!… really I think God was in the mix somewhere there (Brendt that was a bit of humor ; ) in case you missed it LOL!)

So I owe debt of gratitude to God for placing these people with all their flaws, in my life at the right time.

BTW as my hair thinned, I joined the short hair people group about 5 years ago… I went from hair down to the middle of my back to about a 3 on the side and 6 on top clipper setting… my guitar playing suffers from my neuropathy (as well as my typing at times) and I have a really bad memory for lyrics unless it is them most in appropriate song… so I think God knew that a career in music would be short lived but life in Him would be eternal.

Blessings,
iggy

Iggy,

That’s be Briercrest? Or Prairie (Three Hills), the home of the pink sidewalks for girls and blue sidewalks for boys? (Both schools have lightened up on their legalism big time in recent years, and there’s apparently been a Holy Spirit revival at Briercrest recently that did NOT result in immediate reprisals from the administration, so the times they are a-changin’…)

You should’ve come to Providence College in Manitoba — I had long hair all through college and was doing road crew with a team of fellow students for Resurrection Band during my senior year. It would’ve been cool to be a classmate of yours. There’s also many fine pubs in Winnipeg. :)

iggy,

LOL! I think that’s the first time in the history of man that a guy originally from Philly was called ‘bubba’.

The “what part of” was all meant in fun — wasn’t being touchy.

But, admittedly, I probably had been reading too much about Slice/CRN and was goofily channeling one of their ilk with my original “question”. I’m a big fan of Roland!

In retrospect, the joke probably was too “inside” and it’s probably a good thing that you gave the backstory.

Robby,

It might have been both… all I know was I felt a BIG REJECTION coming from them both… which set me back a bit. I almost ran away at one point to join JPUSA… Prairie sounds the most familiar…

It was tough be be a believer in that small town. As a musician, no one got “Christian music” until about my senior year… then I had a band sort a… it was pretty good as I played it for people at school and they wondered who it was…

I sang a bit of a cross between John Schlitt (More like his head-east days… can’t hit those high note anymore!) Ian Gillian of Deep Purple and Neil Young… I can still do the Ian Gillian a bit, but sound more and more like Ronny James Dio… (if I have a good day)

Brendt,

No harm… I did get it, yet I just thought someone would label Steve Taylor an emergent and say he was teaching christian mysticism… wanted to clear the air from the rumors of past and that could start again…

Blessings,
iggy

Steve Taylor — one of the best lyricists of all time. When my cassette player (am I showing my age????!) ate the tape — wow, one very dark day.

but I’ve just recently found it for purchase on an MP3 site so I’m thinking of letting my family know what I’d like for Father’s Day….

I also remember John Schlitt from Head East…before Petra…

Shoot – I’m just old….but I’m ok with that.

Robby,

I am old also… 42!

I think Ingrid may have a lot of secrets… as i am sure that she cannot truly be free to be herself in Christ with all the legalistic laws she has in her head… but I bet every once in a while she puts on some Beethoven: “Erotica” Symphony for kicks…. (just kidding! I understand she is classically trained and that is a very great piece by Beethoven… and is well known)…

“Erotica” Symphony for kicks…

It’s Eroica, Italian for “heroic”, and it was originally dedicated to Napoeleon Bonaparte. Beethoven changed the dedication when Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor.

Don’t want to go TOO far off topic but as a keyboard player and singer that is a LOT closer to 60 than 50, technology is a grand thing. I use pitch correction gadgets, harmoziers, voice modelers and the like(you’d be surprised how many big names use this type of equipment in the studio and in the live arena.

Technology has helped me keep those “old geezer” pipes sounding young!!

Ray,

Hey, and it was a bit of a joke and play on words… did you notice it was in quotes? LOL!

Yet the real question is Did Bonaparte remain Beethovens hero?

Scotty,

Actually my “pipes” sound better as I have matured…. it is the memory that is bad as i just can’t remember lyrics for the life of me… I mean I can still sing “Cat scratch fever” or “Fox on the Run” but for some reason any music I have heard after the age of 14 seems to not stick… even if I wrote it myself… any tricks for that?

No pipes here to speak of. I’m just a bass player.

And some electric/acoustic guitar. Djembe is fun. Harmonica is fun but not a lot of people like it when I try it in public. Mandolin is great but I can’t afford to get my own.

And WAY back in the distant past, some keyboard. I probably played a lot of Beethoven as a child — THERE! Back on topic with Beethoven!

Not bad for an old guy, eh? :)

For Iggy:

Ken saw Steve Taylor in a coffee shop

Starbucks sells The Eagles CD and has Rick Warren quotes on the cups

Hotel California was about devil worship

Steve Taylor and Rick Warren worship the devil

Steve Taylor is the only Christian musician (there’s “Christian” as an adjective again) I’ve seen in concert more than once.

I cannot read a post at any of the neofundamentalist watchdog sites without thinking of the line from “I want to be a clone”:

“…’cause if you want to be one of his
got to act like one of us…”

That pretty much sums up the neofundamentalist attitude.

PTDW,

That seems about as logical as much I have read on CRN and Slice…

Now…. Guys… and gals…

I still think that Ken has much to offer… I know he does not hear me when I state that. I think though his focus is a bit off and some of his theology is man based as it focuses not on forgiveness but on the Law…

realize though these people like Ken think that that is the proper way to share the gospel… as they sincerely believe that the “sinner” must see his sin and repent… yet they miss that that is only “part” of the bigger issue of death. A forgiven sinner still needs life. No matter how much sorrow they have for their sins.. no matter how much shame you can have them come to… without life they are only shamed dead men that has acknowledged their sin… they are the “who will save me?” part of the Gospel…

The other thing is that they are focused on other Christians… they are more concerned with one’s individual holiness and miss we are not holy, nor can we be any more holy if we tried… Our faith is based on only the Holiness of God! It is in Christ alone we are holy… so Steve Camp, and Ken, and John MacArthur can preach being holy all they want.. but if God has made us holy in Christ… who can better God? Who can make themselves more Holy if God has made you holy all ready… instead of the focus on “ME’ being holy… we need to walk in God’s holiness and acknowledge we have NONE!!! and never will… this is the same as saying, “I am saved by Grace, but my works sustain and maintain that grace.” which is what I was taught as a young Christian… and it is a lie…
I am saved by Grace, sustained by that same grace and God maintain my salvation… it is ALL GOD AND NONE OF MAN or man could boast in his part of salvation… it is no longer grace but works.

So, Ken teaches a form of works salvation… as does many others in that camp…

He who gave His Life for me, gave His Life to me, to Live His Life through me… not by works… all by Grace through Faith… and the Just shall live by His Faith.

Blessings,
iggy

Good illustration – though I’d say that resembles the logic-train of Dwayna more than Ken.
