Very good stuff gentlemen…Of course I find myself resonating very much with your hearts.

I like the podcast idea for several reasons.
1) The spoken word is far more defining than blog comments.
2) It allows more voices to be heard at once.
3) Rick if I were to imagine how you sounded; that was it.

My only complaint is that the audio sounds like you guys are speaking into a ’spitoon’ err…I mean tin can.

Tim made the comment something about “we like to clearly define where are boundaries are in the western church” (paraphrased) Execellent point. Recently I posted on the NakedPastors blog about that same idea. We sometimes paint ourselves into corners because our ideas of what makes you a “good” follower of Jesus.

My quote that I posted on Naked Pastor:

It also appears to me that some people find security in guidelines and structure while others (like myself) cringe under the idea of rules and rulebooks. I’ve gotten much benefit from reading, studying, and meditating on the word. I have found great freedom in the pages of scripture. But when I start to create a list of do’s and don’ts I become a slave to the law.

Unfortunately most of Christianity has designed the system in such a way that there is no alternative to following the list. Your a good christian if ___________ Your a bad christian if you don’t ____________. Before long we’re all doing mental check lists about how we measure up to the person next to us. And patting ourselves on the back because we’re not divorced, or a single parent, or a smoker, or a drinker, or struggling with porn, or an adulterer. The whole time the person who is struggling with any of those things dies under a mountain of guilt and shame. They don’t find grace in the church they find condemnation and judgement.

Anyways thanks for your thoughts. Can’t wait until the next one.

Totally unfair using Rich’s interview to open the first Podcast. It took a bit of time to re-gather to listen to the rest afterwards. I miss him so much – his music was the icing on the cake, but just talking and being with Rich…

Nice job, guys! I think you hit a home run on tying the reality of orthopraxy to the ivory tower minutae of concentrating your energy on orthodoxy…

Most excellent!

Chris (not L),
Because Joe lives in Grand Rapids, I live in a small town near Flint, and Rick lives in Florida we have to use Skype to communicate which results in terrible audio. I have some ideas on how I can improve it but it will never sound as good as if we were all sitting in the same room with mics running through a mixer and into a PC.

Chris L,
That quote by Rich has always, always stuck with me. I couldn’t resist kicking off the first podcast with it.

Tim, you live near Flint? Then you know where I am. I just had a tornado roll through my neighborhood.

Oh yeah I do know where you are. I looked up your IP addie awhile back and commented to Joe Martino that MI has it going on when it comes to CRN.info.

Also, I am not a stalker, just curious. ;)

No problem, man. I’m no stalker either, but we’ll have to meet up some time.

Sandman,
You need to come to Owosso and I’ll go there. We’ll eat at this little joint there (Big Ben’s sandwhich)!

8   Sandman
September 12th, 2007 at 8:47 am

Owosso is an easy shot for me. I’ll do you one better and meet you in East Lansing. We can eat at El Azteco.

Sandman,
That’s the town I live in, we could all meet either in E. Lansing, or Owosso. I love the Courtside Cafe, I took Joe there when he came to visit. I didn’t realize you were so close.

The podcast was great, thanks Tim.

Tim and Joe were great, I loved them. But the other guy, I forget his name, unlocked the myteries of the universe for me!

Either one is good for me. I was thinking E. Lansing because I it was equidistant from me. And it’s a short hop for you.

What is the topic next week?

13   chris    http://agendalesslove.wordpress.com
September 12th, 2007 at 9:18 am

I’m also in Michigan. Midland to be exact.

Let’s get together. E. Lansing would be good for the Grand Rapids person and not to far for me.

14   Tim Reed    http://theotstrikesback.com
September 12th, 2007 at 9:24 am

Chris,
You’re in Midland? That’s hilarious. I’ve been up there once or twice. My wife and I did a “tour of Michigan” when we first got here and ran through through Midland. Isn’t your town’s slogan “the middle of the mitten”?

Matt B,
Have you been getting the emails from Chris L concerning the site updates? I’ve been using that email list to keep people updated. I’ll send out the topics tomorrow. Also, we’ll always be happy to do reviews of CDs/movies/TV etc. if you have something along those lines.

In a past life, I was at Horak and McKay Press all the time.

Yes, I’m getting the updates. I might jump in on a podcast if I think I have something to say about a topic.

Apparently Michigan is a hotbed of neo-Roman, semi-Pelagian, emergent, purpose driven apostasy.

If the name-callers are to be believed, that is.

As a Sicilian, I was taught to hate Rome for totally different reasons. So we need to change that title for me personally.

The Baptist church I grew up in played the music (organ and piano only) in cut time. So I guess I’m from the unmentioned “fanny shaking” tradition.

Isn’t your town’s slogan “the middle of the mitten”?

Actually that’s St. Louis.

Midland’s motto is “The city of Modern Explorers” With Dow Chemical and Dow Corning being headquartered here.

I actually grow up in South Warren where the motto there is “If you make it out alive your doing good”

Peace

I know them well. F.P. Horak to be exact.

1. You erroneously assume that all “watchdoggies” do not practice their faith.
2. What about the “ivory tower minutae” of dissecting orthopraxy?

24   Chris L    http://www.fishingtheabyss.com/
September 12th, 2007 at 2:32 pm

Chris,

1. You erroneously assume that all “watchdoggies” do not practice their faith.

It is possible that I missed it, but I don’t think that a comparison to “watchdoggies” was made re: praxis. I think the point was that there is often too much debate over -doxy which has no relevant -praxy…

2. What about the “ivory tower minutae” of dissecting orthopraxy?

If this is pointing out that works without faith is irrelevant, then I would agree…

September 12th, 2007 at 2:35 pm

Chris P. –

#1 – I hope I did not give that impression. Case in point – you.

#2 – There is room for both, but by definition orthodoxy is within believers while orthopraxy is designed to walk among believers. Without the first you are liberal, without the second you’ve lost your salt.

And let me give a disclaimer right up front. I will use flowery and metaphoric language sometimes. Nothing personal, a Spurgeon complex.

Hey Michigan…I thought we were planning a get together????

27   Tim Reed    http://theotstrikesback.com
September 12th, 2007 at 6:16 pm

Sounds like it’ll be concentrated on teh E. Lansing area. There’s a Smokey Bones down in that area if we want to grab some food together.

We are. Let’s do this through email, though, so we don’t hijack the thread.

Okay…Tim you should have my email right? If you could carbon me in on time, place, and if wifes are allowed that would be great.

My wife will be pissed if I said “Hey honey you know those guys I spend all my time on the internet with…Well they live in Michigan and we’re getting together”. I’d have to move in with somebody.
