We’ve got a lot of people from a lot of different backgrounds here. I thought I’d open up a topic for posting links to sermons, devotions, writings, podcasts etc. that have edified and encouraged you. Just a couple of things.

1. This is not an opportunity to persuade others, it is an opportunity to show your perspective. I ask that links go to resources that are generally “pro” as opposed to “anti”.

2. Don’t link to yourself. As much as I”d love to point everyone to my sermons lets avoid the appearance of self-promotion.

Alright then, I’ll go first. Over the last few weeks I’ve been using this Catholic lectionary. I enjoy the variety of scripture readings and its an easy resource to snap myself out of studying scripture for practicality (ie only studying what needs to be studied for sermon preparation).

Personally I’d prefer podcasts, but post whatever it is that has edified and encouraged you.

My favorites:

Ray VanderLaan’s website, video series, and audio files (which, unfortunately, you’ve got to pay for, though I hear this may change somewhat in the future):

Northpoint Church’s podcast and their Sr. Minister, Andy Stanley’s podcast.

Jerusalem Perspective (which has a lot of premium content, unfortunately)

Dwight Pryor – Center for Judaic-Christian Studies

Mars Hill G’Rap

Does that break the rules?

My most influential teacher whom I’ve never met:

John Piper at http://www.desiringgod.org

I know he’s one of those ol’ Calvinists (mostly) but over the last seven years he’s helped me transition from being a “saved employee” of God to a Joyful adopted son. I’ve really latched on the “Christian Hedonism” idea.

I know there might be a deep theological divide between he and some on this site but I really see him as an example of how to love those you might disagree with.

I happen to LOVE Mark Driscoll’s podcasts for Mars Hill in Seattle. He did an awesome series on Vintage Jesus. Also his more recent series on Ruth is great for young men and women. I am encouraging my teenage boys to listen to it. AND, he’s a calvinist, so do I get bonus points for being “open-minded”?

kp – i agree.

And the lovely Zan makes a cameo. We were beginning to think you were taking the women keep silent thing too seriously!

Thank you, Zan (I hope I’m not being too familiar), I can imagine God sitting before all the redeemed and He says,

“Before I give out my rewards I would like Suzanne Lyons to come forward!”

You walk up to the throne fearful and astounded that you were called. God continues,

“Suzanne, I give you the first and greatest reward for true faithfulness in the face of incredible suffering”.

You say, “Lord, what suffering?”

God says, “You were married to Chris Lyons, well done thou good and faithful servant!”

Zan,
I’m a huge fan of Driscoll. Especially his OT preaching. I loved his series on Genesis and Nehemiah especially. Ruth was excellent as well.

What’s interesting is that it takes probably 3 months of listening to his sermons to twig to his calvinism. And once he finally outs himself he spends only 10 minutes (of a 60 minute sermon) on it. That’s my kind of Calvinist.

Tim,
I was the same way. In his Ruth series, he calls himself a “compassionate Calvinist” in regards to it not just being an accident when “it just so happens” that…

I get great laughs out of his humor, and I can totally agree with him, in that I don’t believe it is an accident either that Ruth ends up in Boaz’s field. I appreciate his self-deprecating humor, also. I will definitely download the Genesis series. I have the Nehemiah ones primed and ready to listen to…just needing to find the time. Thanks for the tip!

Have fun with the Genesis series, its like an entire years worth of sermons. He’s even wordier than Rick is! ;)
