Today is the anniversary of the death of Rich Mullins. For me, he seemed like the one voice in the CCM scene of my high school years that didn’t make me want to hide in shame during conversations about Christian music. I still listen to his songs and interviews, and though I never met him personally, I miss his voice, and influence.
Here is a tribute to him from one of my favorite sites and does justice to his legacy.

Tim,
I posted a note on Rich’s passing today, as well.
I have to say that the “I like silence” episode would have been classic Rich. He wasn’t one to put on a veneer if he was exhausted. I miss him so much…
My note is here.
I too miss him…
Strange to miss a man a met once.
Probably one of the best modern Christian songwriters ever.
My favorite…”Hold me Jesus, cause I’m shaking like a leaf. You have been King of my glory, won’t You be my prince of peace.”
Sept. 19th, 1997 I was driving down the expressway in Detroit when the D.J. came on and said “Rich Mullins has gone home” I had to pull over because the tears were forming quickly. Never met the man but I also felt like I knew him.
To this day I “hush” everyone in the room, car, or office when the opening chords of “Hold me Jesus” come on. Because truth be known many days I also “shake like a leaf”.
So Rich thank you for sharing your gift and putting voice to my thoughts and feelings.
This is my favorite tribute video of Rich.
Rich was probably one of the most influential people I ever met. It isn’t an exageration to say that his life changed mine. Much of what I do today, and how I see the world, came from his commitment to Jesus, the kingdom, the poor and for justice. My wife and I still give thanks for the life he lived and the passion with which he followed Jesus.
