I saw this little tidbit posted on SOL this evening, and I have to say that this confirms my suspicion.  These people really do have a persecution complex.  Who knew receiving junkmail was such a big deal?

Using the word “Holiday” instead of “Christmas” apparantly is reason enough for Christians to be offended (it’s also Un-American from what I gather).  It seems to me that as Christians, we are supposed to lay down our rights for others, not stand up for our own.  Maybe that doesn’t apply to American Christians…

p.s. – I know someone will come here say that this is just comedy, blah, blah, blah.  But really the fact that they’re willing to make an issue out of it speaks for itself.

My question isn’t why Christians are offended by “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.” My question is why people are offended by the term “Merry Christmas.”

“Happy Holidays” annoys me because it’s so general that it could mean any holiday from Easter to Labor Day. “Christmas” may be a religious name and thus possibly offensive to other religions, but then, so is “Hannukah” (sp?), and no one seems to be in an uproar over that.

Besides, if we quit using the term “Christmas”, what would we use? “Holiday” is too general. “Christ’s birthday” would make people complain even more. “Santa Claus Day” is just plain silly.

Hee, hee.

I like saying both.
Happy Holidays comes from “happy HOLY days”…so knowing the history…I’m not offended.

Besides, being polite to my Jewish neighbors isn’t compromise.
It’s called being loving.

“Happy Holidays” annoys me because it suggests I should be “happy.”

Yes.

I say “Praise to the God Child” instead of Merry Christmas which elicits both wierd looks and opportunities for witnessing.

I know, I’m a nut. Deal with it.

Praise to the God Child!!

Actually, I’ve been known to say “Merry Christmas” during the Jewish fall festival of Sukkot (Feast of Booths), since this is likely to be when Jesus was actually born… It gives a great opportunity for witnessing…

Are you not happy, Julie?

[For some reason, comments like yours remind me of Phoebe Cates' Christmas soliloquy in Gremlins about Christmas, depression, suicide and her father dying in her chimney when she was a child...]

I like to say “season’s boycott to you” as I buy my holiday/family/Christmas tree. It opens opportunity for witnessing.

I was just using Hannukah as an example, not because I don’t like Jews.

Just so you know. :)

Get rid of the “happy”, and then I’ll listen.

I found the video funny and creative. It actually made me laugh (albeit just once). However, I find it offensive that they elevate buying stuff to such a high level. This was classic American Christian culture (i.e. no different from the rest of our culture).

I always personally say “Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays”

I never get why people are offended when people choose to say Happy Holidays when speaking to a general audience/strangers. I mean there’s no way the clerk at the grocery store or the billboard downtown can tell which holiday I celebrate, and I’m glad they are just hoping I have a good season regardless of what I practice.

As someone who observes both Hanukkah and Christmas, “holidays” is usually the best way to go anyhow!

leave it to paranoid christians to see an agenda where there is none…”the war on Christmas” is a yearly feature in certain arenas…

whatever.

it’s a low grade version of the abortion issue.
keep it going and by fear keep people on your side with a wedge issue…

never resolve it or get any real understanding of what’s the issue…

just keep beating the horse.

I get offended whenever a retail worker tells me what kind of day to have…

Phil,

Re the original; I’m not sure SoL was making a deal out of it – I took it as an offer of something humorous.

Neil,
Point taken.

But I guess I don’t think people would find it funny unless they agreed with what it was saying. Honestly, I’m all for humor, and it doesn’t take much to make me laugh. I just found the video pretty stupid. To me it basically was saying that you need appeal to our little Christian sub-culture for us to shop at your store.

Phil,

I understand the commentary on the video itself, but – as I said, I think SoL was just offering it up as humor.

Whatever you stance on the issue of the assault on Christmas, I do find it somewhat comical that the retailers feel they have to walk such a finely exegeted line…

It would be most honest if they said inserted “nudge-nudge, wink-wink” after each refernce to the holidays.

Neil I’m offended that you sign off on all your comments when quite clearly (not dave) it says “Comment from Neil”. Well that and I don’t like the name Neil.

Julie,
