This Remez thing is sounding more and more like a pretty handy tool to use-- too bad Scripture isn't more well known and memorized among Christians.

Thanks to all for the kind comments. (as for my day job, I consider it 'tent-making', at least while my kids are in school... I'm eligible to retire in 11 years if I want, and also looking at some upcoming sabbatical programs as options...)

Just curious: what would you say to those who don’t believe this belongs in the text but was added?

Part of the controversy, as I read it, is over disagreement with the appearance of negating the consequences of sin.

In terms of textual criticism, though, there are some early manuscripts which have the section from John 7:53 - 8:11 in different places in John (or, in one case, in Luke, which some suggest is more in line with his writing style). So, in reality, it's more a case of "is it in the right place?" rather than "does it belong in the Bible?" There are also some early church accounts (3rd century) referring to this particular incident, so even church history supports that it belongs in the gospels, though the question may be open as to wheter it has been placed in the right book/chapter.

Chris,

This is a good "objective" look at the scripture. Many also misuse this passage in an attempt to show how the church should not discipline.

Can I ask a silly question?

Chris L. why are you in tech world and not teaching scripture somewhere? Maybe you are and I just missed it.

Thanks for these great thoughts. I would imagine you could exhaust all of the blog space with posts about "misused scripture".
