I’m sorry, but this over-the-top link at CRN is just ridiculous:

You may not have heard about The Shift yet, but you will – soon! Shifters, like pod people, are in our midst. Some of your friends and acquaintances could be shifters, only you don’t know it yet. Shifters have wormed their way into church leadership (pastors deacons, elders), worship services, Bible studies, Sunday school, seminaries, Christian schools, youth groups, camps. They lecture, write for Christian news sources and they’re all over the Internet. Now they’re touring the country. Many shifters are familiar faces on TV and have become media darlings. Browse through your local Christian bookstore and you’ll find their names lined up on shelves. Brian McLaren, Jim Wallis, Tony Campolo, Marcus Borg, Dallas Willard, Leonard Sweet, Erwin McManus, Phyllis Tickle, Rob Bell, Dan Kimball, Doug Pagitt, Tony Jones, Scot McKnight, Eddie Gibbs, Ryan Bolger, Jeff & Sherry Maddock, Peter Rollins, to name a few. Every one of them are theological liberals!

I agree with you, Matt. Here is a quote from the link:

But shifters are offended when they’re labeled liberal. And besides, liberal is so yesterday! And let’s be honest here; liberal has a negative connotation, thanks largely to vociferous conservatives (Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Joseph Farah, James Dobson, Gary Bauer, Phyllis Schlafly, Brannon Howse, Don Wildmon, Matt Drudge, Melanie Morgan, Tony Perkins and Hugh Hewitt – whew!) who are on the front lines of the culture war exposing liberalism’s globalist, big-government, radical feminist, rabid environmentalist, pro-abortion, anti-gun, peace at any cost, gay rights, anything goes, sick twisted agenda.

Jesus was pro-gun? This woman is a political/moralist windbag. I just love the melding of the spiritual with the political. Remember, Sean Hannity is a rabid Roman Catholic and Glenn Beck is a Mormon. So ecumenical. And just so you realize I attempt to be fair, Limbaugh has never presented the gospel in over a decade of public opportunity with millions listening. So you draw the correct implications.

I had to laugh as the “editor” posted it under the tag “postliberal” when the author stated, “Every one of them are theological liberals!” so they cannot even agree with each other… which is it…liberrrralllls! or post-liberals…”

How did Dan Kimball get on the list of liberal theologians? Where is the research to back that up?

Rick,

I agree as why is it wrong for Rick Warren to do things with people of other faiths, and work with them on things and not wrong when the ODM’s listen to Mormons, RCC’s and Viagra abusers… LOL!

I see a huge double standard and more support that these guys preach the “American” gospel (like we emergents have been pointing out) as opposed to the Gospel… in fact it seems that as long as your politics are acceptable then you are acceptable… instead of seeing each other as brothers and sisters in Christ and allowing Jesus to be over politics…

Their hierarchical structures seems off to me… you Jesus is acceptable as long as he is a conservative republican.

Some of my favorite political pics… one two

And no John (PB) I do not agree with everything that the websites these are linked to promote.

My favorite line is in the beginning:

In the Sixties [where] the counterculture rejected consumerism, individualism, traditional values and ideas, and protested against their parent’s middle class values. Thus began an all out assault on what had made America prosperous for two centuries.

So consumerism and individualism are Christian values now? I remember, that’s right, Jesus said, “make sure you buy lot’s of crap on earth and build barns to store it in. You want to have as much stuff as possible when you die”.

Seriously, this article is embarrassing even for CRN’s standards…

Matt,
You asked how Dan Kimball got on that list, how in the world did Scot McKnight make it?!

“Christian values”

Here is where I find some of the emergent stuff challenging. Many times the conservative Christians project abortion, nationalistic freedom, gun rights, anti-gay rights, and a host of other issues they deem as “traditional values” But is love a value? Mercy? Grace?

Search that link and find me those qualities. And the entire premise is that these sinners are impacting the ambiance of my American lifestyle. That attitude is heresy, pure and simple.

What I love is when people throw a label like “post-liberal” around without really understanding the nuanced thought about philosophy of language, textual engagement, etc. etc. etc. as if they are able to traffic in scholarly realms that takes a lot more work than cursory arm-chair skimming to understand.

furthermore,

the “liberals” in the theological world–and I mean that in the academic sense of the word (i.e. the real sense of it, not the junk drawer boogeyman word of the crazies)–have heavy counter-critique for the criticisms of post-liberalism.

when you don’t understand something, you shouldn’t be talking.
Maybe ask questions, but definitely not talking.

how lovely, that quote above.

As if the conservative globalist, big-government, rabid corporate welfare, get in your bedroom, access to guns without common sense limitations, wars of convenience, fear driven divisive, anything goes as long as you say you love Jesus, sick twisted agenda posing as the “christian worldview” is really making life better for us here.

ECM’s missional concern

Emergents are concerned about being missional in a postmodern world. “The word missional emphasizes a return to the church’s identity as existing for the world—tto be God’s stewards over creation, to be a light to the nations, to be witnesses of the inaugurated kingdom of God on earth.”[7] In this regard Emergent leaders have been critical of evangelicalism. They believe evangelicals have not been effectively missional in a postmodern world. Naturally, many evangelicals find this view arrogant and self-righteous. Sadly, ECM’s arrogance has caused division between them and evangelicals.

And this… in the midst of her scathing blather against them (with all the SOP of lumping and broad-brushing) she then blames THEM for the division…

It really is sad what people will do in the name of God.

In his book They Like Jesus but not the Church he talks of being friends with a lesbian.

Therefore, he’s a liberal.

just another example of CRN’s speedy movement from wacky-ignorance-and-misunderstanding hot air to full-on-tin-foil-hat hot air.

Sorry, Rick. =)

As a gun-owner myself I just don’t see why the average American should have military grade weapons in their home.

And I’ve seen ‘em in pawn shops in my wife’s hometown.
It’s crazy.

I agree. I was kidding. I own a gun strictly for business purposes. I am in favor of strict licensing. No auotomatic or military grade either.

Bazookas? Maybe. :)
