I read this article ,which is linked from that page, about Calvin’s dealings with heretics, The Right to Heresy. I would like to know what all you theologians and historians think about it.

We’ve linked to that before – I found it to be rather illuminating, on a number of fronts, how some things have changed, yet others remain pretty much the same…
Eugene – Calvin was a mean spirited, tyrannical, self righteous, power hungry, slanderous, and murderous heretic who I believe was saved.
His view of God, redemption, grace, and almost every other major Biblical doctrine was antithetical to Biblical teachings.
But if I live in his town, I would have quickly became a Calvinist!
The whole Apartheid system was justified by the view that some are of the elect and others not. It was only in the last decade or so that the Dutch Reformed Church changed their view and asked forgiveness for their error of justifying Apartheid. I think I now understand much better how that erroneous theology could be upheld for so long.

My son just got back from a singing tour of South Africa, where he visited the Apartheid museum, sang at a children’s cancer clinic in Soweto (along with a number of other things) and learned a lot about your part of the world he had previously only an idea of where it was located on the map.
When our faith leads us to classify any group of people as something less than human (an image of God) and unloved by God, it ceases to be a faith that can be reasonably termed ‘Christian’ (like Christ).
I followed the link but didn’t see where I could take the test myself…

Just a quick comment on my article on Calvin. The Right to Heresy is not a social commentary only, so it is well researched and documented. It is also not a statement on Calvin’s “salvation” – that’s not my place to go.
I also agree in a sense with Eugene’s take on discrimination. In no way do I mean to offend Calvinist Christians, but have you guys noticed how virtually all Calvinists are white, well-educated, western, males? That should tell you something about who God finds favor in, no?
–Note: I am getting emails from people about this. This IS “tongue-n-cheek” guys, not actually what I believe. I can’t believe I have to actually explain it!

I found your article truly well researched with references given. I wish all articles on the web was this well researched and referenced. No where in your article did you state anything on Calvin’s own salvation, so I did not find it judgemental in that way. Thank you for your time that you put into that article and that you made it available.
