Friends,

I guess these folks, Steve and Kathy, have been doing their thing for a while now. I only heard about them because Christian Post did a story. I don’t really care one way or another what they do with their time and money, but I was just wondering about something after I read the story and watched one of their, uh, videos (which according to my powerful sense of discernment was racially insensitive). The CP story has this paragraph:

Aside from his book, Gray has also been addressing the issues of his “absurd religion” through The Steve & Kathy Show, a Christian comedy TV show featuring skits that are often critical of megachurches and the emergent church movement.

One skit, titled “Seeker-Sensitive Mega Church Guy,” which spoofs the megachurch phenomenon in America, has attracted over 49,000 viewers on YouTube as well as a recently-won Emmy award.

My question is, I wonder what happens when Christian Comedians, who are clearly despised by the ADM crowd, make fun of the people that the ADM crowd despise? I wonder how the two can co-exist without there being some sort of black hole opening in the universe and causing the failure of all life as we know it? Worse, what happens when the comedian apparently is the pastor of his own megachurch and apparently has a very strong urge to be Rob Bell?

I’m just wondering…

I love Steve and Kathy’s stuff, I have it posted on a couple of my blogs. They are biting, and a little inappropriate, but they hit the nail on the head.

I find the irony to be too much to bear.

Steve and Kathy can do a spoof on churches, using a well known Cheech and Chong bit, and be racially insensitive while doing it and PB says it “hits the nail on the head”.

So satire, using things of the world, and comedy are now acceptable. I guess “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” has never been more true.

BTW I don’t have a problem with “Steve and Kathy” doing their thing.

What I do have a problem with is the screeching about “Tickling of ears” and turn right around and see the screecher’s using the same methodologies and somehow justify it.

These are just the sort of folks that certain ADM’s should be writing exposes of. I find them unfunny and espousing a seriously broken theological perspective. Someone out there ought to be warning us of their dangerous theological perspective and their dangerous use of comedy to ’spread the gospel.’

I have never said comedy is bad.

I use humor in my messages when appropriate. Mostly really bad puns.

I said some stuff is inappropriate, but no more than say Saturday Night Live as far as racial stuff. The Samurai preacher is racially insensitive, but it is also a stupid bit. So I don’t like it.

But the mega church stuff they do like adding on the smoking room and Mr. seeker sensitive mega church pastor is EXCELLENT satire. I think you guys have also been the victim of ‘Mr really really really bad preacher- he is enough to turn anyone emergent. I imagine him teaching at Duke Divinity School. ***

Gee big surprise the same guy that makes a joke about enslaving Mexicans finds negative stereotypes of Mexicans hilarious.

PB,
What is satirical about any of what you wrote? Do you know what satire is?

That’s a rhetorical question, right?

How big can a church get before it becomes an apostate-mega-church… seems size does matter in some eyes.

Is there a link to their videos?

…apparently has a very strong urge to be Rob Bell?

Interesting point considering that my introduction to Steve and Kathy’s “”"”"humor”"”"” (one set of quotes just wasn’t enough) was an over-the-top, inappropriate, extremely-overly-caricatured, highly-mis-representational, outright mocking of Bell.

I have to apologize to Phil Johnson for my criticism of his “po-motivators”. Steve and Kathy’s videos make them look like the PhotoShop equivalent of worshipful fan-mail.
