Chris L,

Thanks, very good stuff. I’ve always been fascinated by the history of the Jewish feasts.

Perhaps it’s just time that we celebrate Sukkot as a time when the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us…

There are some of us that still believe this happens, and not just symbolically in the celebration of Christmas. (Christ’s – mass). When I came to believe this, it really helped me put the rest of the “celebrations” associated with Christmas in their proper perspective. Focusing on the “word becoming flesh” helps me to either ignore or actually enjoy things like chubby guys in red suits, goofy reindeer songs, and 50% off sales on electric beard trimmers.

I like Christmas fine, but I don't understand why Christians fight so hard to claim a holiday that is so filled with consumerism fueled by greed and pride. Christmas, observed as it is by the majority, is a secular holiday.

I guess our way of observing holidays will reflect what is in our hearts, and nothing says "narrow is the way" like the way most of us observe Christmas.

We spend too much time worrying about the petty stuff. We can fight over the "principle of the thing" all day, but we should be fighting the good fight instead of adopting slogans.

There is a case to be made that the observance of days is not New Testament Christianity, but the level of observance of "Christmas" is way out of bounds and has detracted on many levels from the meaning of the gospel. The words "Peace on earth, good will toward men" are especially misleading when used outside the greater context of the cross and resurrection.

You know Chris L., if you keep this up, some of us are going to have nothing left to believe in or hang on to or celebrate. You've already destroyed creation for me (and my planned Christmas gift to my family of a trip to the Creation Museum), now Christmas. What's next Easter, Reformation Day, Israel's birthday?

Could you pick on some other religions for a while like say, Kwanza or Hanukkah or Ramadan? People might start worrying about 'us' for spending so much time uncovering Christian sacred cows.

:)
