Neil-
By tomorrow that clip should be available on the website. You should watch it. This was classic Bush humor.
By the way, The Daily Show is not there for news but comedy (but often it is profound comedy). They dish it out to both sides. Bush just happens to give them plenty of helpings.

As for the post, I agree it should not be removed. And no one was suggesting censorship, that is an emotional strawman, what was suggested was Silva remove his own post since it is so obviously wrong.

But I agree with NC, it should remain, but be updated with a correction and a mia culpa...

Chad,

I think the exchange you posted by Stewart is a fine example of why I cannot stomach the show, nor that attitude... Bush suggested that he was considering what good he could do after retirement and he was mocked for it. So what if he said it was "intriguing" - that only means he is not committed to THAT particular possibility.

Stewart's comeback about the homeless guy was asinine. It is a disgrace how peons mock the President and it pisses me off to no end!

I have been thoroughly disappointed with Bush as a President, but Stewart's exchange above shows he lacks complete understanding of the President and a complete lack of respect for anything but his rating.

Picture two men walking carrying large bags of fresh groceries. As they pass a homeless and hungry man, they begin to argue over the condition of the homeless man.

Man #1 - "Believe me, he is beyond help.

Man #2 - No he isn't, he can still be hel;ped.

#1 - No, and God doesn't want him helped.

#2 - God wants everyone helped.

#1 - I'll tell you what, let's go home and write a post on this, that is real religion. Leave the poor and the fatherless to the liberals.

Well spoken, Rick.

however a Christianity that is overwhelmingly a continuing doctrinal dissertation is a cold and algebraic religion more suited for redundant “at the gate” dicussions than powerful and practical exhibitions of God’s redemptive love.

There was a theologically loaded snippet on The Daily Show last night. Did anyone catch it?
Stewart was showing clips from Bush's exit interviews with Gibson and at one point Gibson asks Bush what he will do in retirement as he is only 62.
Bush says that he has always thought it interesting if people who went into retirement would do something with their lives like help fight malaria or AIDS. That would be an "interesting thing to do," he says.
Cut to Stewart.
The audience is giggling but Stewart cuts them off. Give him a break, he says. This may be a very noble gesture on the part of our lame duck president, Stewart suggests.
Cut back to Bush.
"I didn't say it is something I will do. I just find it an intriguing possibility."
Cut to Stewart.
WHAT???!!! Stewart wonders: Yes, intriguing....Like walking up to a homeless man and saying, "It would be really interesting to give you thousands of dollars right now in your time of need. I am not going to, but it is intriguing, isn't it?"
Stewart: I'm reeeeallly gonna miss this guy!

After I finished laughing I thought to myself: What a powerful indictment this is on the Church.

Hubris + Hypocrisy =

Hubrisocrisy

I listened to some guy explaining away the common and clear understanding of Jn.3:16 on CRN. He says "whosover" means only those who believe, not a universal offer. And of course he uses the original language differently than other Greek scholars which means that you can only understand the gospel if you understand Koine Greek (correctly also). Poor farmer Jones is flat out of luck. Of course Jesus drawing ALL men to Himself also means only that miniscule band of chosen few.

It must be so uncomfortable to have to explain away the glory of the cross by limiting God's redemptive offer of love to a comparative handful, not to mention the glee that they exhibit while standing in undeserved grace themselves. There are certainly important doctrinal issues, however a Christianity that is overwhelmingly a continuing doctrinal dissertation is a cold and algebraic religion more suited for redundant "at the gate" dicussions than powerful and practical exhibitions of God's redemptive love.

And to have an entire ministry whose expressed purpose is to report on and make snide remarks about others is profoundly unchristian. I liken it to reporting continually of the destruction of Hurricane Katrina from a myriad of perspectives, complete with invectives and hyperbole, but never lifting a finger to help those drowning in its waters.

Still searching for Christ in Christianity.

What think ye?

I think it takes a whole lot of chutzpah for Chris R to lecture someone on making factually questionable statements...

...kind of like Fred Phelps lecturing John Piper on civil discourse...
