Thank you, Phil!

Blessings and best wishes on your singing this Sunday - may the people that need to hear the message both hear and understand it!

Weird. I was asked to sing this Jackson Browne song on this coming Sunday before Christmas at, of all places, my church! I love the tune, and am a big JB fan, but I couldn't believe we were going to do it in church (a large church with nearly 2,500 in attendance each week). As I anticipated the sort of discomfort this might cause among listeners who thought they would hear another year of "Oh, Holy Night", I started searching the web for more information about the song and found this site. The article posted here really helped me wrap my head around just how important this message is and how much Christians need to hear it. I feel somewhat humbled by being the messenger and knowing I am equally guilty. Much to think about. Thanks to Jackson for the critical truth and thanks to the author here for the additional thoughts. I hope I make it through the song!

"it is hard to argue with him, sitting here warm and safe in America."

I agree. It also reminds me of how we sit warm and cozy in our churches expecting our missionaries to "suffer for Jesus" in such adverse conditions. Then when a dust of snow blows through, we close our doors on Sunday morning. How weak and sad of a testimony that is to our brothers and sisters out on the front lines.

Chris,

A fine addition to the series. It seems to me that I read somewhere a blurb that it was a similar idea that prompted a certain someone to write a certain book about who Jesus wants to save. It had something to do with a church building a multi-million dollar building while people in the same community were going hungry.

Hmmm...strange, isn't it, how God uses the mouths of 'heathens and pagans' to remind us of who we are supposed to and what we are supposed to be doing. (Isaiah 58)

Thank you for this post.
