We are often told by the ADM crowd that contemplative prayer, lectio divino and other practices are inherently evil and cannot be rescued because of their roots. See this piece as an example. It makes me wonder, what about Karate? Do Ken and his friends stand againt Karate? It started as with world view that is certainly anti-biblical.  I wonder if we’ll get an answer.

There are elements of karate that encourage eastern meditation that they would be against. What seems impressive to me is that they can see a demon under every meditative bush and yet they are blind to the dry, dead, and powerless state of their own movements.

BTW – can I use chopsticks in the church fellowship hall?

Joe – if we are speaking generally about being consistent, how about this quote in Ingrid’s Campus Crusade post:

“Several years ago, the former Midwest head of Campus Crusade for Christ bailed out of evangelicalism altogether and joined the Eastern Orthodox church. Curious, I went to hear him, arrayed in his new black, Eastern clerical garb and watched him bow low before an icon of the Virgin Mary next to the podium.

He said he left evangelicalism because it didn’t stand for anything. He found the Orthodox more pro-life, more consistently pro-family, rich in doctrinal teaching, reverent worship and serious treatment of God. While ending up in the East is not the answer, I salute him for recognizing the great evangelical disaster and heading for the door.”

This guys joins the Catholic Light crowd and Ingrid lauds him, even by her own admission he bows to Mary (idolatry). She “salutes” him for heading out the evangelical door and winding up in the eastern arm of the RCC. This is a very clever way to take any story and maipulate it to fit inside your overall narrative.

I salute her. :)

I forgot to mention one glaring omission in this man’s reasoning about which Ingrid salutes.

“He found the Orthodox more pro-life, more consistently pro-family, rich in doctrinal teaching, reverent worship and serious treatment of God.”

Even a 8 year old sunday school girl can see…there is no mention of the name of Jesus, which seemed to be the standard with which everyone else was JUDGED – not SALUTED!?

Ingrid: I salute him for recognizing the great evangelical disaster and heading for the door.

A really new perspective on Paul: Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual head for the door.

That was funny, Brendt.
I don’t like to type “LOL” but I did laugh out loud.

Actually, Orthodoxy is Catholic Deep and timeless–can you say 5 hour liturgies all standing?

Anglicanism is jokingly called Catholic Lite.
But as an Anglican I don’t see it.

Actually, I think they also need to stand against Tae Kwon Do.

It primarily concentrates on the lower body.

We know how that could orient people toward thinking about their naughty bits and the general swimsuit area further exacerbating the sexualization of the culture.

It occurs to me that there are karate teachers out there that dabble just a smidge in the eastern mysticism and such, that really don’t know what they’re doing. For a Christian to recognize that and ignore the small bit of bad stuff to concentrate on the good stuff (exercise, self-defense) would require discernment.

Ya know, the real kind. Not the kind that ADMs use.

There is a guy here in Billings who is up front about his faith and teaches Martial arts. He uses it as an outreach.

I thought about taking the courses myself and since my son saw Kung Fu Panda last night he’s got some natural moves… I am seriously thinking of doing it.

How about karate as ministry? Its free. Kids are taught self-esteem. They memorize scripture for belt advancement. They invite their friends. They pray before class. They learn that 99% of all situations can be handled through verbal means rather than physcial. They fellowship. So we can do karate without bringing Eastern practices into the mix. I am quite confident the ADMs with approve of my ministry.
