Rich Mullins* on a factor in which he found that Roman Catholicism more closely matched Scripture than evangelicalism:

I had read a book called Exploring Spiritual Direction by Alan Jones. That whole evangelical discipleship thing really turned me off, as most evangelical things do. I was just so depressed from meeting all these kids that were turning into caricatures of great old men or great old women, these great saints. People were thinking [that] the way to become spiritual is to imitate the lives of really spiritual people.

Berit Kjos of Lighthouse Trails:

We don’t “need” mentors and human models “to grow” as Christians; we need to trust God and follow His ways!

It is truly encouraging to see that LT is apparently willing to learn from our RC brethren and sistren.

* Full disclosure:  I was the interviewer that Rich was talking to.

Brendt,

The tongue-in-cheek aspect aside, the comment about mentors and human models is borderline unbiblical even if he puts “need” in quotation marks.

Even Jesus had human teachers (scandalous!), so it’s seems like it would take a lot of nerve for me to say I can’t learn from anyone.

Under the category of rich irony:

This note appears before the article:

Comment by Berit: Notice the mystical legalism [in bold letters below], which establish man-made rules [and standards] that “add to God’s Word” and undermine our reliance on His Spirit. (emphasis and [...] his)

Yet in the article the very first thing that is in bold-face type is this: “When Lighthouse Trails reported in November of 2006…” (BF emphasis his)

So apparently Lighthouse Trails report from November 2006 is legalism added to God’s Word.

Particularly when the Bible pretty much “commands” it…

No “mentors” or “models”?

Really?

Well, if we all became really fascist about the regulative principle and eliminated sunday school, we could all just show up on Sunday morning, have an extended reading of Scripture, acapella singing, a short call to conversion by reading verbatim the words of the apostles from Scripture, prayer, foot washing, eucharist, the occasional baptism and go home.

If all we need is the word and the word says we don’t need a teacher except the Holy Spirit, then we don’t even need to run the risk of some human offering their opinions about the bible in the form of “preaching”. It’s not necessary anymore because the Bible is complete and finished.

Things would probably go faster…and then we wouldn’t need to cancel for the Super Bowl.

;)

Personally, I “think” the LT “article” “sucks”! :-)

The motto of Service Nation, “Be the Change,” is taken from Hindu guru, Mahatma Gandhi and a motto that both Rick Warren and President Barack Obama would agree upon.

here is another gem from that load of… but I am impressed that one can fit TWO guilt by association references into one short sentence. Apparently encouraging people toward socail change is also unbiblical since non-Christians and Democrats do it…

“We don’t “need” mentors and human models “to grow” as Christians; we need to trust God and follow His ways!”

You know you live in an individualistic society when . . .

Good point merry… Kjos has a thoroughly modernist way of thinking.

hmmm…

how did Kjos learn that “we need to trust God and follow His ways”?

Actually,

Who IS Kjos and why should we care what he/she has to say?

On what basis did this Kjos (gesundheit!) become a person whose opinion matters?

Talk about “I have a blog, I’m important now”…

Just to be clear….

To all who commented on the accuracy/veracity of the statements by Mullins and Kjos, I’m not sure that I totally agree with either person myself.

I just found it interesting that an ADM rep was agreeing with someone who was saying something positive about Catholicism, especially when that someone was theoretically into mysticism and 100 other targets of the ADMs.

(not to mention the general Romophobia in ADM-land)

To help Ken or Ingrid with their online rebuke of Bert (he’s a real strange one btw) I will print out some verses and save them the research. Yeah, as if!

If someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual, restore them gently.

Matt. 18:19

19 “I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. 20 For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”

Rom 12:15

Mourn with those who mourn.

Col. 2:19

…..and they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For he holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.

Eph 4:16

He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

Gal. 6:2

Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.

I Thess. 5:11

So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

I Peter 4:8

Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins

I Peter 4:10

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.

A blogger who suggests we don’t need mentors or human models is like a preacher preaching against preachers. How did the early Christians, and present day mission fields, know what a Christian is like?

They watched Christians according to Paul’s “epistles read of all men”. When you have an unchristian attitude toward someone (Warren) it causes you to make ridiculous statements galore.

Did’t Jesus say something about salt that points to the same truth as this?

For a person claiming Sola Scriptura Berit does not seem to read Scriptura much.
