I do believe, though, that we do a disservice when we become so dogmatic about non-essentials that the leaps in (il)logic required to keep the systems spinning start to drive folks away.

Here's an interesting article I read recently which discussed this phenomena (tying Creationist theory with eschatology and its net effect)

Christians seem to like nit-picking each other’s theology...

Do you think this happens because we’ve forgotten the urgency of spreading the gospel? Or is it something even deeper than that, mainly that we’re missing out on the true heart of Christ?

I see the same urgency as years gone by... just not the modernist approaches. I think it's a product of our freedoms and technology.

When I've been involved in ministries overseas, where there is real persecution or opposition, it takes significant differences to divide.

Here we do it because we don't like someone's style or methods. And we have the ability to bitch about it at the speed of light.

I have added your wife to my prayer list Phil. May she be totally healed. I am sure that your Christian friends and she and you have been a tremendous testimony at the hospital.

Good thoughts here. Christians seem to like nit-picking each other's theology and judging the actions of non-believers, as we've well established.

Do you think this happens because we've forgotten the urgency of spreading the gospel? Or is it something even deeper than that, mainly that we're missing out on the true heart of Christ?

I see plenty of Christians still "witnessing" as far as handing out tracts and sharing the gospel message, but not nearly as much compassion to go along with it. I see good things happening these days, and especially since the economy got so bad I see more and more non-believers interested in God. I'm starting to hear God's name mentioned almost everyday on secular radio.

Now is an amazing time for Christians to forget about the things that don't matter and take on the heart of Christ. We just don't have time to be anything but compassionate.

The Ham goes on to comment on Ross being on TBN... considering the filth TBN peddles as biblical teaching, Ross is a welcome relief.

Ken Ham serves as a great example of the type of religious idolatry Tim Keller described in the post by Jerry.

Even if you are a 24-hour literalist, to call Ross and Kaiser compromiser serves no purpose. And to say Ross is "one of the leading compromisers in the church today" - is stupid.

And if you want to see Christian attacks that are most unproductive to our message, check out a blog like Verum Serum that are obsessed with Obama, Palin, conservatives, liberals, and all the other political machinery. What a waste.

I believe in the big bang as the divine method. However it could have happened otherwise. If we are going to die on that hill we become a stumblinglock to others, and to label someone a Biblical compromiser who isn't young earth is ludicrous.

For me, redemption is the issue that must be defended.
