And in a classic case of irony, Rush Limbaugh, who may be worth a half a billion dollars earned mainly from talking (demeaning, attacking, standing for freedom, etc.), warned people about giving money to Haiti through the Obama government because they could not be trusted with money.

The irony in that is three-dimensional and you don’t even need special glasses.

My missions partner and his two sons had already planned a missions trip in March. It has taken on a whole new meaning. Continue to pray for Haiti, one of the most religiously abused people on earth. Because of the poverty, voodoo, and proximity to America, many preachers have gotten rich by using Haiti as a fundraiser. They will answer one day.

A friend of ours (a girl from our youth group when Zan and I were sponsors, and she was also in the discipleship group Zan led) graduated from Anderson University last year, and is now teaching in Haiti. We’ve heard from her that she was not hurt in the initial earthquake, but she’s now “housed” on a soccer field with hundreds of other folks w/o food or shelter, so we’d appreciate prayers for her and all of those who are in immediate need.

As for who to give through, I’d trust private aid groups more than the government, as well…

I think we should give through groups like CAMA servces which works with groups on the ground year round.

PS Rush Limbaugh is not a Christian, he just believes in ‘god’

#2 – Me too, but not any of my points. I am sure Limbaugh would not have made that statement under Bush, etc..

That actually would be my advice to people making charitable donations regardless of the administration in power. The federal government can’t really be trusted to use those funds wisely.

There is actually a young woman who was on our worship team at church who is from Haiti, and she actually just moved back last month. Her family is in Port Au Prince, and we did receive word that none of her family (at least her immediate family) was harmed, but their house has pretty much collapsed. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around having to deal with that sort of thing, but for many it’s a reality now.

That’s not Rick’s point, Phil (see #5). Did you actually hear what Limbaugh said? See my link on the other thread about Pat Robertson. He’s disgusting.

I love “UP”. Not a fan of politics, kinda like Rick, really like Chad, sorta like PB, appreciate Phil, and somewhat like Chris L.

It’s Friday!

IDES (International Disaster Emergency Services – http://www.ides.org) is a good group if you don’t know whom to give to. Also, for anybody near central IN we hoping to take a trip up there to pack food if you want to join us.

The tragedy with Haiti is that this is much bigger than what NGOs can handle.

Unfortunately, this may be something that governments are better suited at addressing. For example, following World War II, it was the U.S. government that instituted the Marshall Plan.

We may need a Marshall Plan for Haiti, sadly.

Read “Written In Blood” for a pretty good history of Haiti. Available in large public libraries.

I first went to Haiti in ‘84. It was a dump then and only has gotten worse with each trip but can only imagine how awful it must be now.

I have some pretty radical ideas about what to do.

This news that a military supply company places Bible Passage codes on their weaponry is troubling to me.

1st – what in the name of Christianity does “Christ the light of the world” have any business being on military equipment that is being used to kill people and not witness to them?* This is very wrong on many levels.

* For full disclosure I am pretty much in agreement with Chris L’s viewpoint on the just war but still find this very disturbing.

I just watched this last night. It is amazing how much can be said with silence.

It was a great film.

Open thread moment:

Massachusetts – MASSACHUSETTS – may have saved the US from 0bamacare.

Now we just need a Woot-off, and the week would be perfect!

Politics cant save. He is pro-choice. The only benefit is it slows down a steamroller of out of control orgy-like spending.

You guys are so optimistic it makes me sick. What is he going to do, single-handedly overturn a law that is already in place? Problem is, even the Republicans who are pro-life didn’t do anything about that law when they controlled the house.

In all honesty, when do you ever think that will be an issue where his opinion is put to the test. It won’t.

ahh…the beauty of it all.

Don’t vote for Obama cause he’s pro-choice and wants national healthcare. Vote for Brown cause he’s not for national health care but is pro choice.

Were did I keep my political rule book? I need to figure out the scoring process again.

To the OP, does anyone know of a way to download YouTube Vid’s to my computer so that I don’t have to be online to watch it?

Chris,

Just for the record: I didn’t vote for Obama or McCain. And my comment has nothing to do with whether or not Obama is pro-choice or whether that Massachusetts guy is anti-universal health care.

Methinks you made quite a leap in logic to arrive at your point whether it was directed at me or not.

It’s almost like: Don’t vote for McCain because he’s ‘pro-war’ but vote for Obama because he’s ‘pro-choice.’ As if there’s a difference.

Don’t vote for Obama cause he’s pro-choice and wants national healthcare. Vote for Brown cause he’s not for national health care but is pro choice.

Actually, for Mass. residents, both viable ballot choices were pro-abortion. The difference was that one of them would kill a bill that allows federal funding of abortions, and the other one suggested that Christians shouldn’t work in the emergency room if they don’t want to be forced to perform an abortion.

I guess it always comes down to these sorts of choices, though, when voters are essentially forced to choose between two candidates for a given position.

I do understand what you’re getting at, though, because I have heard people say things like, “I would never vote for a candidate who is pro-choice”, but then if pushed to make a choice, they will. I don’t know if it’s always a matter of a person not staying true to principles, or just someone acquiescing to the rules of the game.

When it comes down to it, much of politics is a game, I suppose. Personally, I think everyone should be glad that this guy from Massachusetts got elected even for the fact that he may cause this process to get slowed down a bit. Even if you’re for something getting passed, I would think that having something that wasn’t just rushed through for sake of having something would be to everyone’s best interest.

I for one am glad that our benevlant government won’t be fining me any time soon for not having insurance. I’m poor so I can’t afford it, so in order to help me they’re going to fine me if I don’t get it. What the wha…?

Vote for Brown cause he’s not for national health care but is pro choice.

Actually, this is not an accurate statement. Brown is not for the current proposed health care reform bill. He just said that he is for health care reform and voted for it in the past.

Re:31

There are subsidies for individuals who can’t afford insurance. That’s one reason (of many) why the bill can’t seem to bend the cost curve (without imagning a world where politicians finally start cutting Medicaid).
