So, do I go funny or serious for this week’s open thread?  How about both – but only choose one to avoid conflicting emotions…

Is that Kevin Bacon? Hasn’t he been in a few movies?

In response to Christ L.’s link:

Not worried about it. It is to be expected.

If “homosexuality is a sin” is your gospel, then rejoice when you are persecuted…don’t complain.

Rick,

I don’t happen to care what the truth is that you are speaking, so long as it is directly from Scripture. And if you are jailed for speaking a simple truth, then – even if it is something as minor as declaring the basic truth about the nature of homosexuality as being a sin – you are being jailed for your faith in Christ and his Word.

Not worried about it. It is to be expected.

I’m not worried about it either – I do not suspect that this type of tomfoolery will land in the US during my lifetime. Granted, it will likely arrive in Canada sooner than later, since it’s already a crime there to make statements against Islamism.

I’d also note that, from the stories about this online, that it appears he was specifically asked if he believed that homosexuality was sinful, and he answered in the affirmative. So it’s not like he was specifically making it an issue. In my experience, more increasingly often it is someone else asking a Christian about their stance on homosexual practice that brings it into a conversation, rather than a Christian bringing it up as part of “the Gospel”…

I think it could easily happen here in your lifetime (or at least mine, seeing as how I am a lot younger than you :p ).

I would be interested in seeing video of the situation (not that it exists) as there are always two sides, but I think the comments of one of the shop owners where the guy sets up says a lot about the guy doing the street preaching (see PB, we aren’t ontologically opposed to street preaching, or at least I’m not). And the fact that he’s done it so long in one location without incident.

I think I’d rather see some form of story presented in such places. Maybe a street drama or something down in sidewalk chalk. I just think that people wouldn’t automatically raise their guard that way and that it would sit with them longer.

#6 – Then rejoice!

This is what he said, though.

“‘I felt deeply shocked and humiliated that I had been arrested in my own town and treated like a common criminal in front of people I know,’ he said.

‘My freedom was taken away on the hearsay of someone who disliked what I said, and I was charged under a law that doesn’t apply.’

Not exactly rejoicing.

Rick,

I don’t get your point. Those statements, assuming they are true, sound calm and simple. Is it antithetical to “rejoice” to calmly state the facts (even) if they are in your favor?

“And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

42And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.”

“Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”

Our response to persecution must be different than that of the unbeliever who objects and lays out his case. I do not believe one’s view of homosexuality represents a persecution for Jesus Christ. But if it is – Rejoice!

The devil desires to draw some moral line in which we must fight; Jesus desires to be lifted up to draw men to Himself. The practice of homosexuality is a sin just as the practice of hedonism. I have come out of the closet today.

I agree Rick, I had a similar thought when I read the article. But, considering what he’s out doing, and that those particular comments were calmly stating the facts as Neil pointed out, and that we have no idea the whole conversation he had and what the writer picked up on, I don’t think we can judge his attitude. Maybe he was/is rejoicing.

I do not see how calmly answering questions about the situation is at odds with rejoicing.

Assuming the facts are reported accurately – I do not see why he could not rejoice and also make sure the facts are reported accurately.
