And although the war was won and the slaves were free, there is no earthly war that can wipe out bigotry and prejudice. And human justice, carried out by humans, is so many times tainted by prejudice and meted out more passionately for those with whom we identify and not so passionately for those with whom we have no real earthly bonds. And if those southern states had been in fact a separate country from the beginning, would the north had gone to war for those same slaves? Would the North have intervened in Southern Sudan?
Man is a piece of work alright, and the aristocracy he thinks exists inside his mind is in reality a fallen and self centered master whose consistent thoughts are about himself. Killer angels? No, just killers and coat holders.
But, no matter how passionately you ask the questions Rick, your ‘ifs’ were not the ‘ares’ and your ‘woulds’ are not the ‘dids.’ You cannot rewrite history and it is not necessarily profitable to bemoan it. Rewriting history is always easy, but not always profitable.
But thank God someone *did* intervene when they did. Thank God the South was not a separate country. Thank God this is a United States. Thank God we live here. Thank God Jesus saves me, you, here in America.
It isn’t always pretty, but I thank God for every breath I take in this land. And I don’t want to breathe anywhere else right now.
I wish you could think a little more highly of humanity of which you are a part.
